Formed in 2018, the Vattenfall Heat team in the UK has bid and won the largest public sector and the largest private sector tenders to come to market in the last five year and has a healthy pipeline and a reputation for disrupting and challenging the market, particularly in regards to driving low carbon solutions.


Overall purpose of your role

Reporting to the Head of Commercial, the Commercial Manager will be responsible for shaping and delivering our projects, through supporting our sales team in planning and delivering high quality bids and proposal, winning projects, through to being accountable for the commercial negotiations and successful closure. You will be a key member of the team tasked with developing the business in England, with a particular focus on the South West. You will work alongside Account Directors, Engineering and Technical Managers and Project Managers to ensure a smooth transition from bidding, negotiation, to “on the ground works”. As Commercial Manager you will be responsible for shaping, structuring and delivering the commercial elements of our deals. This involves bringing commercial acumen, risk management and understanding of contract structures. In addition, you will be evaluating and managing risk and working with internal stakeholders and external advisors to identify quality projects, as well as present compelling proposals, negotiate effectively and drive deals through to financial close.

The role will be pivotal to business growth, with responsibility for winning and closing multiple connections over the next five years.

As a Commercial Manager you will steer and support the ongoing contract management of our contracts, from concession agreements to connection agreements, to ensure that we deliver our obligations and risks are managed accordingly.



Key responsibilities include:

• Lead, drive and commercial proposals to Clients, both Private Developers and Local Authorities;

• Win, negotiate and successfully close contracts;

• Structure and conduct Commercial contract negotiation until Final Investment Decision (FID);

• Lead and and drive projects through Vattenfall internal governance.

• Develop strategic relationships with regional and local government to steer policy and strengthen Vattenfall’s market presence; and

• Represent Vattenfall Heat with clients, customers, government ministers, and other stakeholders.

Your Essential Qualifications

This role would suit someone with a local authority, professional services, commercial/business development or energy industry background with relevant experience and exposure to doing deals.

We are looking for an engaging, communicative, driven and diligent commercial manager who is able to shape and deliver projects through their lifecycle. Your ability to have a long-term view (our projects and contracts are 40y+) and propose creative and flexible solutions to commercial needs will be key for this.

As an experienced, commercially minded professional, you have the ability to translate technical inputs into commercial impact, and to identify and manage risks in changing and challenging environments. You are also able to understand commercial fundamentals, from financial models and how key drivers shape solutions. Your ability to understand the details and keep the big picture in mind will help you to drive projects and strike the right balance between “doing” and “steering”.

Naturally collaborative and a strong team player you will be able to build strong relationships with peers, build project teams, and work with clients, legal/ technical advisors and other key stakeholders to ensure we deliver a sustainable and profitable portfolio of heat and decentral energy projects. This work will be fundamental to our ability to develop and grow the Vattenfall Heat UK footprint in the UK.


To be successful and enjoy the work with us we believe that you have the following experience and personality:

• A minimum 5 years of relevant experience within energy market, real estate or infrastructure projects.

• Proven experience in business development, bidding, and negotiation – with a good understanding of risk management. And ability to understand complex contracting structures;

• An understanding of contracts structures for development, investment and delivery including offtakes and supply agreements.

• Ability to work in the interfaces between technical, commercial, operations, construction, and legal specialist, bringing people together;

• Experience in working with senior and C-suite level executives to deliver projects and targets from internal and external organizations; and

• Managing projects to strict and challenging deadlines.

The location of this position is South of England (London and/or the South West) but home-working is supported.
